CLINTON—It must be, what, maybe 22 degrees outside. At 6:30 p.m. Lenchner. I did dress warmly with at least three layers everywhere, including silk underwear, and mountain boots. I reason, “Hey, if they can fight fires in weather like this, then I can tough it out.”
Before we leave the firehouse, I happen to latch on to Ben when I sit next to him on the rear end of a fire truck in the bay. He had just flipped his phone shut and volunteered that he had been talking to his son, who was in the Army working security in Haiti near Puerto Prince, living on a soccer field.
I grilled him about his son: His name is Kyle Livingston and he’s with 209 MP Company stationed in Fort Polk, La., after a tour in Iraq. Now in Haiti more than a month, he told his dad he’s had only three showers, thanks to the U.S. Embassy.
