Senior rate available now for trash pickup
Posted: Tuesday, Mar 9th, 2010

CLINTON—Seniors may now qualify for a $1 discount on trash pickup from Area Disposal, spokesman Joe Roberts said Monday.

Those over the age of 65 who have at least two residents in the household and live in the city limits of Clinton, may pay $12.85 instead of the full rate of $13.85, Roberts said. To qualify, seniors need to fill out a form, available at City Hall.

“It’s addressing a need that people have requested,” said Roberts.

Rates were $12.85 for most other customers, but went up $1in February with the switch from alley pickup to street-side pickup. The new rate also included a free 65-pound recycling tote and twice-a-month pick up. Customers also aren’t required to sort the recyclables.

Roberts said many customers formerly qualified for a discount based on being a senior, but those disappeared when the city converted from alley to street pickup. The rate of the discounts varied, the result over the years of acquisitions of customers, and not all of them were paying the same rate. This rate adjustment makes the billing consistent.

Seniors who feel they cannot move the new 95-pound capacity trash bins, are encouraged to call Area Disposal to arrange assistance at no extra charge, Roberts said.

Roberts said more than 600 households, or about 30 percent, have signed up for recycling. A large trash bin has been placed in the city parking lot at the southwest corner of Monroe and Washington for people to drop off recyclables, but Roberts indicated that would be temporary.
