Clinton 14 U baseball 0-1 in Mount Zion Tournament

Modified: Friday, Jun 29th, 2012

MOUNT ZION – The Maroons’ participation in the Mount Zion Tournament got off to a rocky, error-prone start.

They committed eight errors, including seven in the first two innings, to lose its tournament opener to Mount Zion 15-1.

As a result of the loss, Clinton enters into a must-win situation today, when it faces Mahomet at 6 p.m.

“We are very familiar with Mahomet,” Clinton coach Ryan Hopper said. “We played them four times, so there’s not going to be many secrets there. I can promise you, if we play defense like we did tonight, it’s going to be a similar score because they’re a very solid team as well. They don’t beat themselves, so if you want to beat them, you’ve got to get base hits and make all the key plays. It’s going to be a tough game, and if we play like we did last weekend, I think we’ll be alright.”

The Maroons will also need to win their 5 p.m. game on Saturday to have a chance to advance past their pool bracket and play for a chance to win the tournament championship on Sunday.
